SLOW STEAMING: A transient fashion or here to stay?

Slow Steaming encompasses the operation of vessels at slower than maximum commercial speed, while adding a ship to the container service to keep the original frequency.

Certainly not a new issue, the Slow Steaming phenomenon has returned to the liner trades in full force since 2007. Initially, this was driven by the need of saving fuel costs, soon thereafter followed by other imperatives of addressing over-capacity, reducing harmful emissions and ... empty pockets.

By mid-2008 half of the 31 North Europe-Far East slings had slowed down, plus a handful of others. An extensive assessment in the publication shows that 2 years later, modern box vessels cruising slower than ships in the era of sail can be found be found in all major East-West and North-South trades. The joint capacity of all slowed down bottoms is nearly half of that of the total containership fleet, with the number of extra vessels tight into the Slow Steaming services making up for some 8%.

Slow Steaming is a multi-faceted strategy, affecting many sectors of the liner trades and raising a multitude of questions, including:
-          how it serves the environment
-          the actual speeds
-          the container box fleet
-          the effect on the total fleet
-          the savings (per knot, per service, per TEU)
-          the logistics effect
-          the number of ships and carriers involved
-          the possible alternatives
-          the scheduling and integrity of services
-          the technical side of the matter
-          what’s in it for the shipper, and:

the future of Slow Steaming once full recovery is there, capacity tightens again, and/or fuel prices sink.

All these topics are brought together in a unique, August 2010-published comprehensive report:

SLOW STEAMING: A transient fashion or here to stay?

All information in this study, presented in the form of a wealth of tables and concise write-ups, has been collected, researched and analysed in June/August 2010.

CONTAINER THROUGHPUT & TERMINAL CAPACITY in Europe

The bad news then:

In September 2008, the collapse of Lehman Bros turned financial turmoil into a worldwide economic crisis, translating into a global downturn of the container trades of proportions not seen before - in the aftermath, terminal capacity supply changed from scarcity to surplus

The good news now:

Recovery started one year later, developing into sometimes boisterous growth from mid-December 2009 onwards. Liftings in the main Europe-Far East trade have increased by 21% in the first quarter, whilst weekly vessel capacity has risen by nearly 19% since the start of this year

So?

What is the status of actual and planned container terminal capacity in Europe? How are container volumes estimated to grow over the next 10 years? How is box handling supply expected to develop in the same period? Where might space run tight; where will it remain ample?

The answers:

Dynamar’s latest report CONTAINER THROUGHPUT & TERMINAL CAPACITY in Europe analyses the present and future container terminal capacity in all European ports called by Europe-Far East and Transatlantic container services. Those are the two trade lanes that represent the largest share of box activity on the Old Continent. Terminal capacity data are compared with historic and forecast port throughput figures. Results are tabled per port, per country and per area: Baltic/Scandinavia - UK/Eire - North West Europe - South West Europe

Features include:

-          Identical, compact overviews of over 50 existing terminals in more than 20 ports

-          Planned terminal expansions and some 20 new projects, similarly structured

-          2010-2020 status and annual development of terminal capacity

-          10-year TEU throughput of all ports

-          2010-2020 forecast of port handled TEU development

-          Overview of all Europe-Far East and Transatlantic container services

-          European ports of call analysis for both trades

-          Extras, such as transhipment shares, inland modal split, trade volumes, and so on

All information has been collected, researched and analysed in April/June2009 - the report is immediately available

BREAKBULK - Operators, Fleets, Markets

The effects of years of strong economic growth worldwide have resulted in large industrial and infrastructure projects of all kinds. It caused a revival of the conventional shipment of general cargo (breakbulk) in ever larger and heavier consignments, along with the rise of new carriers joining the established operators.

The emphasis of Dynamar’s 2nd Breakbulk publication is therefore on the major conventional cargo operators, the capability of their vessel fleets, as well as on the markets they serve.

BREAKBULK - Operators, Fleet, Markets

centres around unique (in this field) carrier rankings by deadweight capacity and orderbook for operators of:

-       General Cargo Ships, including Multipurpose/Heavy Lift vessels

-       Ro/Ro (deepsea) Vessels

-       Heavy Load Carriers, including semi-submersibles

and also:

-       Vehicle Carriers,

-       Conventional Reefer Ships, and

-       Container Vessels

In addition to deadweight, the report supplies separate rankings for the heavy lift capabilities of the tonnage operating and on order in terms of crane (tons) and ramp (tons) capacities  and float performance (submerged depth).

Amongst others, extensive company profiles (Corporate History, Background, Markets and Trade Lanes) are provided for each of the combined Top 25 Ranking of the largest General Cargo and Ro/Ro vessel operators. Each survey is completed with a deadweight and heavy lift capacity profile for the subject’s existing fleet and newbuildings.

A separate section offers compact profiles of the Top 15 heavy load specialist carriers, with similar fleet data, including a submerged depth profile.

The report, which is immediately available, is completed with an overview of important breakbulk and project shipping markets by major cargo segment, complemented with the main trade areas and relevant notes on recent developments and outlook. The appendices provide an analysis of breakbulk sailings worldwide, an overview of general cargo volumes in 15 main European ports and a summary of three-and-a-half years of Breakbulk shipping news.

All information has been collected, researched and processed in the final quarter of 2009

Any and all information for this report has been collected, researched and processed in June/July 2009.

The collapse of Lehman Bros in September 2008 signalled the start of a daily deteriorating container shipping market. However, without the 25 largest liner companies and their 30 subsidiaries (all profiled) world trade in general cargo would simply come to a grinding halt. Even if volumes fall by 10% this year, as it is now widely expected, those will still exceed the very good 2006 results! Yet, the continued existence of many carriers, including some in the Top 25 may at risk because of an unprecedented fall in revenues. How are they coping? Will they ultimately be saved by the distinctive economies of scale of their very big ships or rather go under just because of these leviathans? Build your opinion through this just published 2009 edition of the Top 25 Container Liner Operators - by placing a pre-publication order you will ensure yourself of your copy as soon as it is available!

The North Europe - Far East Container Trade

The North Europe-Far East trade ties up some 20% of the world’s cellular capacity but only 6% of all container vessels … Indeed, the largest box ships afloat are trading on this route - their average capacity reached 7,300 TEU upon publication date … Jointly, they occupy 11 kilometres of quay length every day … Vessel size is to continue increasing unabatedly: 22 slings of average 12,500 TEU vessels in five years time? … A continuous challenge for the port and terminal industry to handle them … and a must for the trade to grow and grow and grow along …

Will every current Top 25 operator having invested in those survive such an enormous increase of economy of scale? Not yet this one, but many other answers about the main enablers of globalisation are found in this 2007 edition of the Top 25 Container Liner Operators - don’t miss it - it is IMMEDIATELY available!

Transhipment & Feedering - Trades, Operators, Ships

This NEW (September 2007)  Dynamar report builds on the previous 2004 publication (as well as various updated presentations by the author, Mr. Dirk Visser), and completed with recent in-depth analyses of all aspects of the worldwide transhipment and feedering markets. The reader is offered an insight into a huge port activity and maritime industry that lubricate the modern container liner trades and without which globalisation could not reach the out-of-the-way places of this world. Contrary to the general perception, the common feedership is still not much larger than 700 TEU on average - those deployed by dedicated operators are still under 1,200 TEU only. Together, they lift a huge volume, which is out of the official statistics, but can be estimated at well over 35 million TEU worldwide in 2006.The publication contains five main sections:

TRANSHIPMENT

Setting the report’s framework:

Definitions; mainline services concepts; hub-and-spoke; relay and interlining; hub port selection criteria; dominant transhipment ports; hubs versus gateways, etc.

FEEDERING

Looking at the industry from a more strategic and general view:

Definitions; types of feeder operators; size, speed, design of feeder ships; industry consolidation; mainline developments affecting feedering; scaling-up; hub port issues; organisation of the feeder move; new hub-and-spoke projects; conclusions

TRADES

Five chapters on the main feeder markets (Europe, Mediterranean, all Asia, Latin America, Others) and their catchment regions; who-hubs-where; connections from the main ports; 5-year hub and regional port statistics; regional transhipment-related port projects

OPERATORS

Extensive biographies on more than 20 common feeder carriers (corporate background, recent developments, services, fleet details); short profiles of another 15 (niche) operators; ranking overviews including average feedership size by operator; carryings; the World’s Top 5 Feeder Operators; extensive overview of the largest non-operating owners

SHIPS

Feeder ship design and requirements; pictures and plans of representative vessels in various size categories; new concepts and projects; overview of non-operating owners

Emerging Maritime Nations (I): VIETNAM

11 December 2001: China joins the World Trade Organization - 1.3 billion people 9,300,000 sq kilometres - in 2001 China’s 10 largest ports handled 22.5 million TEU - five years later, in 2006 that had increased to 76.7 million TEU: +243% …

11 January 2007: Vietnam joins the World Trade Organization - 84 million people living on 325,000 sq kilometres - in 2006 Vietnam’s box regions of note handled 2.7 million TEU ... will it five years later, in 2011 be 6.6 million TEU: +243% as well?

If Vietnam’s accession leads to a similar explosion of the container trades, but then commensurate with its people/surface relation, then volumes are even to increase up to
5-fold in 5 years …!

Dynamar’s first in a new series of publications on emerging maritime nations shines a light on the exciting
opportunities offered by Vietnam having become the 105th member of the WTO. Logistics and infrastructure in the form of an adequate port industry and dense container liner services are a prerequisite to make economic promises come true and are an important focus of the report. BREAKBULK - Solutions, Trades and Operators

50 years of Containerisation = 50 years of Non-Containerised cargo!

After the first Transatlantic container crossing in 1966 the conventional shipment of general cargo (breakbulk) was felt to become a sunset industry, sooner rather than later. However, and although the ongoing penetration of the container into the dry cargo trades worldwide may not yet have peaked, in the wake of the China Factor breakbulk shipping started flourishing again as well - there are now even fears of a severe shortage of suitable tonnage to carry the breakbulk load!

These important developments induced Dynamar to initiate and proudly present a brand new study:
Breakbulk - Solutions, Trades and Operators.

Just published and instantly available, this report is all about the present way of carrying breakbulk cargoes by deepsea liner-type shipping services, operated by common carriers deploying various kinds of ageing, on occasions, but increasingly very modern and often highly versatile tonnage.

- Breakbulk

Development of breakbulk liner shipping since unitisation emerged in the 1960s: cargo definitions - initial actions of carriers to turn the tide - the penetration of the container into the liner trade - where are we now-what will be the saturation point - breakbulk demand drivers - deepsea fleet and orderbook outlook for all vessels capable of carrying breakbulk cargoes - vessel categories - modern breakbulk liners - commercial characteristics.

- Solutions

Ways and means of shipping breakbulk cargoes using * Conventional ships * Barge Carriers * Container vessels * Forest Products carriers * Reeferships * Heavy Lift carriers * Ro-Ro vessels including PCTC developments * Others. Those chapters related to the specialisations that emerged in the 1960s are truly “The Story Of …”: origin; development; carriers; markets and trades; the future …

- Trades

Extensive grid-wise overviews by main East-West and North-South route: carriers - trade lane - tonnage deployed - frequency

- Operators

Fifteen full and twenty-five short profiles on a selection of the world's most prominent breakbulk operators: full legal style and address details - corporate history and background - fleet features - main trades and services

- Appendices

Include: * Main breakbulk cargoes and major commodities * 15-year non-containerised general cargo volumes in 12 European ports * containerised and non-containerised general cargo shares of 100 ports worldwide * monthly sailings in 2005 by main area and vessel type * capacity on order by main operators * 3 years of breakbulk trades news * cargo-related chartering terms

All information has been collected, researched and processed in the first quarter of 2006.

Terminal Handling Charges - A bone of contention

Is THC being used as a revenue earner or a cost recoverer
? For a better understanding of the introduction and application of the intricate THC matter, this special report opens with an elaboration on tariff structures and the role of surcharges in general. Briefly discussing the current THC turmoil in the Far East and Israel, it then describes the CENSA formula, detailing the 17 terminal cost elements agreed upon between parties. There is an extensive analysis of THC differences in four European main ports, and efforts are being made to explain the different underlying calculation bases. After brief references to competition law and Incoterms in relation with THC, the report looks into alternatives, considers anomalies and concludes with a suggestion for a modus vivendi. The Annexes, amongst others, contain: -THC in more than 200 ports worldwide; -port handled TEU statistics for those ports; -conferences, other groupings and their membership; -rates of exchange of all seaboard countries worldwide. Published March 2003.

The TACA Case and the Future of the Conference System

As the report’s title suggests, it deals with the (recent) history of the Transatlantic Conferences and (avoiding the legal jargon) analyses the consequences of the verdicts of the European Court of First Instance for both TACA and the Conference System in general, including the antitrust issue. It goes into the differences between the philosophies of American and European regulators, enlightening the role of the (semi-) official bodies involved. An inventory is made of the (alleged) advantages and disadvantages of conferences, both from a shippers’ and a carriers’ perspective, and the possible future. After providing the full address details of the principal players of the TACA and the Conference game, the annexe of the report contains extensive carrier-based TEU statistics, giving the interested reader a fascinating picture of how the trade between North Europe and the USA developed since 1993.

The report includes a simplified war risk surcharges calculation model (also supplied separately as an active spreadsheet).
Issued 1 October 2001 - updated November 2002. Published actual war risk surcharges as introduced and amended by conferences, discussion agreements, groupings and individual liner operators are being continuously updated to the latest situation.

MALACCA MAX (2), Container shipping network economy

This study deals with many more aspects and consequences of the introduction of mega container ships compared to its predecessor. Instead of the current multi-porting pattern, the mega carriers will use a hub feeder (spoke) system. Based on five selected hub ports, the study contains a transit time analysis between 389 ports that are part of the Europe-Far East trade route to provide a tool for container route planners. Edited by a Delft University team under the management of Prof. Dr. Ir. Niko Wijnolst (published by Delft University Press). Issued: December 2000
Price: EUR 75, handling/postage EUR 5

MALACCA MAX, The ultimate container carrier
The concept of an 18,000 TEU(!) capacity container ship was one of the topics of our "Liner Shipping 2020" workshop (Hamburg, Rotterdam, London, April/May 2000). A comprehensive, yet compact study of this innovative concept, edited by the designers themselves and managed by Prof. Dr. Ir. Niko Wijnolst. Issued: September 1999 (published by Delft University Press).
Price: EUR 35, handling/postage EUR 5

Former Soviet Union: Oil Export Study 2001-2010
It's a new twist on the old "Great Game" - not who's going to control Central Asia and its massive oil wealth, but who's going to transport the fuel to Western markets. Russia, for one, wants in on the action and is hoping, all in one swoop, to regain control over its own exports, an advantage it lost when the fall of the Soviet Union shifted its borders hundreds of miles backwards. This strategically unappealing situation is receiving attention from those who are pulling the strings in Moscow and elsewhere. Investments have been made by both the authorities and oil companies of Russia and other CIS nations.

Other projects are either currently being implemented or still on the drawing boards. A noteworthy development is that Russia has been (and will be) stimulating investments in oil infrastructure on its own soil (e.g. Primorsk). This might pry away existing business from the traditional ports, but it is not expected that these long-time operators will rest on their laurels. They will fight back, improve their facilities and service level. Finally, real competition is emerging!

With this in mind, Downstream B.V., Dynamar Consultancy B.V. and Aurum Business Consultants B.V. have made a detailed study of what is briefly described above. The study, called Former Soviet Union Oil Export Study, is based on a detailed investigation of the total annual production, domestic consumption and export of crude and oil products of all the individual FSU states during 1990 - 2000 and forecasts the annual production, consumption and export quantities over the period 2001 - 2010. The study also provides a complete breakdown per type of product and per existing export route and gives a good insight into the effects the new pipeline and terminal projects, once on stream, will have for the currently used facilities. The study comprises a complete overview of the already existing crude and oil products logistic facilities (ports, terminals, pipelines) and those that are either under construction, proposed or still in the planning phase all along the Baltic Sea, Black Sea and Caspian Sea coast lines.

The study is a must for those who are professionally interested in the existing and future logistics of the FSU oil exports. The study provides valuable information for those who are faced with strategic decisions that relate to the transportation of crude and oil products from the FSU.

Short description of the study:
- Part I, Crude Oil (64 pages)
- Part II, Oil Products (62 pages)
- Appendices: 10 (15 pages)
- A3-size full colour map with ports, pipelines, etc. and three full colour regional maps
- Hard copy of the study plus one CD Rom with the complete text in PDF-format.
Price: USD 9,500 for one hard copy of the full study including the CD Rom.

SHIPPING INNOVATION

Niko Wijnolst & Tor Wergeland

Introduction

Shipping is by far the oldest global industry, exposed to market forces for centuries. It created a culture of competitive advantage way before management pundits coined this term. Innovation, and in particular technological innovation, has been the key to profitably outsmart competition.

Shipping Innovation, a new and unique 850-page textbook, puts developments in innovation into perspective for both students and professionals involved in the global maritime cluster. It consists of four parts covering a wide spectre of topics from many disciplines.

PART I - SHIPPING AND THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

Part I provides a bird¡¯s eye view and explains the basics of the long term relationship and dynamics between shipping, shipbuilding and the global economy, offering a conceptual framework for analysing and understanding shipping markets.

-       Chapter 1        Global Economy and Seaborne Trade

-       Chapter 2        Global Shipbuilding Dynamics

-       Chapter 3        Global Shipowning Dynamics

-       Chapter 4        Analysis of Shipping Markets

PART II - SHIP INNOVATION

Part II discusses the origin and drivers that have resulted in today¡¯s myriad of ship types, each with their own competitive advantages. On this basis, a set of instruments is proposed to analyse the comparative performance of ships, assess performance limits, and derive from these insights a set of triggers to result in a methodological framework for pro-active innovation.

-       Chapter 5         Oil Tankers

-       Chapter 6         Bulk Carriers

-       Chapter 7         Container Ships

-       Chapter 8         Gas Tankers

-       Chapter 9         Chemical Tankers

-       Chapter 10       Other Ship Types

-       Chapter 11       Shortsea Shipping

-       Chapter 12       Ship Costs

-       Chapter 13       Benchmarking, S-Curves and Innovation

-       Chapter 14       Triggers for Shipping Innovation

-       Chapter 15       Ports and Shipping

PART III: INNOVATION THEORY

Part III provides a comprehensive overview of innovation perspectives at various levels of aggregation, such as the economy, the cluster, the business, and the individual. As clusters are crucial for such innovation, some case studies are included from such prominent European maritime groupings, as well as a set of proposed cluster enablers.

-       Chapter 16      Innovation and Wealth Creation

-       Chapter 17      Innovation and Business

-       Chapter 18      Innovation and the Individual

-       Chapter 19      Innovation and Creativity

-       Chapter 20      Innovation and Maritime Clusters

-       Chapter 21      European Maritime Clusters

PART IV: SHIP DESIGN AND CASE-STUDIES

Part IV introduces and explains the complex design and innovation process of ships, it contains two detailed design studies and not only provides a number of case studies from the past, but also very topical ones related to the sustainability of shipping, such as ballast-free ships.

-       Chapter 22      Ship Terminology and Design Methods

-       Chapter 23      Container Ship Design

-       Chapter 24      Ro-Ro Vessel Design

-       Chapter 25      Forest Products Ships
